The Forces That Shape Us

ARC of Motion Journal

A force acting on an object can cause it to change its:

• Shape

• Size

• Speed

• Direction

This is as true for us as it is for physical objects. We, too, are shaped and moved by the forces around us. Every interaction—with people, spaces, and ourselves—leaves an impact and can shift us toward a new path.

The first step is to ask: What are the forces at play?

The second: How are they affecting me?

And then: How am I responding and reacting to them?

Finally, we can reflect on the most important question: How is this serving me?

Sometimes, the forces around us are beyond our control. However, we can change how we respond to them. This awareness isn’t just vital in life—it’s central to the work we do when crafting a character or exploring movement. In character work, understanding the forces at play from moment to moment can bring your character to life and give you, as an actor, something tangible to respond to. It invites you to be fully reactive, allowing you to explore the internal movements and motivations of the character through an external, physical lens. This dynamic interplay between internal forces and external responses creates performances that are authentic, layered, and deeply engaging.

As you move forward, consider how these questions might inform your creative process or daily life. By recognizing and exploring the forces shaping you, you can approach challenges and opportunities with greater awareness, intention, and purpose.
