What Shapes Us?

Every moment, our environment exerts its influence on us, shaping our thoughts, emotions, and actions. From the spaces we inhabit to the people we connect with, we are constantly molded by our surroundings and our relationships to them.

When stepping into the shoes of a character, this understanding becomes a powerful tool. To truly embody a role, we must see the world through their eyes, feel the spaces they occupy and respond to the forces that define them.

Understanding The Forces That Define Character

Which elements play a powerful role in defining us, both consciously and unconsciously?

Here are a few key elements to explore – both for ourselves and the characters we portray;

The Space We Inhabit

Are we in a place that feels expansive and freeing, or confined and restrictive? How does our physical environment affect our posture, breath, and overall state of being?

The Clothes We Wear

What do they say about who we are, our identity, or the roles we play? How do they shape how we move, how we feel, and how we present ourselves to the world?

The People Around Us

Relationships are powerful—they can uplift, challenge, or weigh us down. How do we respond to the people in our lives? What energy do they bring, and how does it influence our behavior and choices?

The Ground Beneath Us

This goes beyond the physical world. The ground represents stability, foundation, and the forces that keep us grounded—or leave us feeling unsteady. How connected do we feel to our foundation?

Step into Awareness

Take a moment today to observe how your environment is shaping you:

• Notice the space around you—does it support or restrict you?

• Reflect on the energy of those you interact with—how does it influence your state of mind?

• Pay attention to what you’re wearing—how does it make you feel or move?

Whether you’re exploring your own growth or delving into a character’s story, let these questions guide your understanding. Start by noticing, reflecting, and experimenting—because the more aware we are of the forces shaping us, the more intentional we can be in shaping ourselves.
